Sadiq Khan has revealed his “worry” about Donald Trump’s potential re-election this November, voicing fears about surging hate towards himself and his family.

The London mayor has also told Labour that the new Government should drop its diplomatic efforts and openly support Mr Trump’s rival, Kamala Harris.

Speaking to the New Statesman, Mr Khan also said he’s “so impressed” with Mr Harris’s pick as Vice Presidential running mate Tim Walz, describing him as “hopeful”.

Mr Khan said: “I've been so impressed with Tim Walz. It just shows the judgement that Kamala Harris has in relation to her choice for vice-president.

“Compare and contrast that with the choice made by the other guy, in JD Vance.

"It’s obvious what my politics are. I'm a member of the Labour Party – we're a social democratic party. I want the Democrats to win.'

“It's no secret many Labour Party members go and volunteer for the Democrats during presidential elections.

“We shouldn't pretend otherwise. Many of my staffers helped all three: [Barack] Obama, [Hillary] Clinton and [Joe] Biden.”

Asked about how he would react if Mr Trump returned to the White House for a second time, Mr Khan said: “I worry about what a second Trump presidency would mean for me and my family, but I'm not going to allow these people to cower me.

“It makes me even more determined to do my job.”

Mr Khan was a vocal opponent of Mr Trump during his first term in office, including branding him “ignorant” and “ill-informed”.

The President also hit back at Mr Khan, warning: “I will remember those statements. They are very nasty statements”.

After the terrorist attacks on Borough Market and London Bridge, Mr Trump falsely accused Mr Khan of saying there was “no reason to be alarmed!”

Mr Khan’s office replied that he had “more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks”.

In June 2017 the Mayor called on Theresa May’s Government to cancel President Trump’s pending state visit to the UK, as his “policies go against everything we stand for”.

He also gave permission for anti-Trump activists to fly a protest balloon of the President crying as a baby in a nappy.

On a visit to London in 2018, Mr Trump claimed that Sadiq Khan had “done a very bad job on terrorism… a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the horrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in”.

Mr Khan later compared the language of Mr Trump to that of “the fascists in the 20th century”.

Donald Trump followed up with attacks that Mr Khan is a “stone-cold loser” and “very dumb”.
