Rachel Reeves was taken to task this morning by both a Labour voter and Laura Kuenssberg, both of whom demanded to know what exactly a Labour government will do differently if elected.

Ms Reeves failed to offer any substantial responses, beyond two small tax rises that Ms Kuenssberg described as “crumbs”.

Labour, which is being ultra-cautious about announcing any tax or spending plans ahead of the election, has already said it backs the Government’s cut to National Insurance, and will stick to the Conservatives’ spending rules.

Asked whether there will be real-terms cuts to some departmental budgets if Labour wins the election, Ms Reeves said her party would not be able to turn the economy around “straight away”.

One viewer’s question, read out live, demanded to know: “When will you come clean about how you will deal with the abominable state of our national finances?”

A frustrated Laura Kuenssberg pointed out: “At the moment, you want to stick to the same spending rules that the Conservatives do, you don’t want to put up lots of tax, and you don’t want to borrow for the day-to-day”.

“That leaves some people wondering what the difference is between your plans for the economy and the Conservatives’ plan for the economy!”

She also confronted the Shadow Chancellor with another viewer’s question, this time from a self-professed Labour voter.

Iain from Manchester said: “I’m normally a Labour voter and I’d like to know what the difference is between the Conservative and Labour’s fiscal policy, as I’m not seeing a very clear dividing line”.

Rachel Reeves claimed there are “two clear differences” between her and Jeremy Hunt, namely an “initial injection of cash into our public services by closing those tax loopholes and having a proper windfall tax on the energy companies”.

Ms Kuenssberg swiftly cut her off, accusing those tax rises of being “crumbs”.

Ms Reeves said Labour’s second difference is their desire to “grow the economy”, getting people back into work and boosting productivity.

However she conceded that many of Labour’s proposed changes, and their full impact, “will take time”.

The star BBC interviewer noted this concession, pointing out that many voters want to know “what is the big difference between the two parties’ economic offer?”

Lots of respected economists, she continued, say that the Labour and Tory economic prospectuses “are not that different”, including the IFS who this week said there’s a “conspiracy of silence between the two parties” who are not being fully honest about the tough spending choices that will need to be made in 2025.

Ms Reeves denied that she isn’t being straight with voters about how tricky Labour’s inheritance will be if they win power, describing it as the most difficult set of public finances since the Second World War.

She added that she will conduct a spending review “quickly” if Labour wins the election, but said it was not possible to do one from opposition.
