Three people died — one of them a child — in separate early-morning crashes Sunday in the Washington area, according to police.

About 3 a.m., a man was killed and a pedestrian seriously injured in a five-vehicle crash on the inner loop of the Interstate 495 Beltway, said Maryland State Police.

According to police, the accident began when a black Dodge Crossroad rear-ended a white Chevrolet Cruze. Another driver, trying to help those involved in the crash, stopped his car on the shoulder and was walking in the road when he was hit and injured in a second crash, police said, with a gray Nissan Sentra hitting the damaged Dodge.

A third crash occurred when a white Chevrolet Impala stopped at the scene, apparently also to provide assistance, police said. The Impala was hit by a black GMC Acadia. And it was the driver of the Impala who later died from injuries, police said.

Drivers from all five vehicles and the pedestrian were taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center. Police identified the deceased man as Fredys Castillo Rivas, 46, of Upper Marlboro. Rivas was the driver and sole occupant of the Impala.

In separate incident, about 1:30 a.m., two vehicles collided on Suitland Parkway near Southern Avenue in Southeast D.C., U.S. Park Police said. One child died as a result, and six other people were injured, police said, adding that the crash shut down the parkway in both directions for six hours. They did not identify the deceased.

About 7 a.m., U.S. Park Police responded to a fatal crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. One car with one occupant was involved, and the person in the car died, police said, noting that the crash occurred near Laurel between Routes 197 and 198.

The accident temporarily shut down traffic on the major thoroughfare, but it was reopened by about noon in both directions, police said.
