PUTRAJAYA: The decision by the Putrajaya Bersatu chief to return to Umno does not affect the division’s administration and activities, says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
The Bersatu secretary-general said that Datuk Seri Erwan Mohd Tahir had resigned as division chief on Oct 10 last year, after he lost the contest for vice-president post.
“Since his resignation, deputy division chief Fathul Azam Hashim took over the division leadership and had worked to strengthen the grassroots by roping in new members and opening new branches in Putrajaya.
“I would like to state that the party’s presence in Putrajaya remains strong and that our struggle is not based on support towards a particular leader,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 2).
Hamzah was commenting on reports of Erwan’s move to quit the party and return to Umno.
Aside from him, it is said that 120 of the division members also applied to join Umno.
The group submitted their membership application to Putrajaya Umno chief Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor at Umno headquarters at Menara Datuk Onn on Friday (Oct 1).
Erwan had said the time was right for him to rejoin Umno and that the party had managed to end political polemics that have threatened the wellbeing of the people and economic stability during the Covid-19 pandemic.
