Laura Kuenssberg quizzes Robert Jenrick over ECHR
Robert Jenrick has announced he will appoint Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg as the Conservative Party’s chairman after the grassroots favourite endorsed him for leader last week.
Mr Jenrick described the former cabinet minister as a “tireless campaigner for the grassroots” who “understands better than anyone the need for party reform”.

The leadership contender is promising to “empower members” and conduct a mass exercise in reforming and democratising the party, alongside pledging to end candidate selection stitch-ups.
His commitment came as he rejected Boris Johnson’s suggestion that Britain should hold a referendum on ECHR membership, arguing a general election win would be enough of a mandate.
He argues that leaving the foreign court, which would allow Britain to put an end to the illegal migration crisis, will allow the Tories to stop “banging on about Europe” and allow them to start talking about “other things that the public care about, like the economy, the NHS, housing, education”.

While he disagreed with Mr Johnson on the ECHR, the former Prime Minister had warm words for Mr Jenrick, praising his housing policy in an interview promoting his new autobiography.
Mr Johnson said: “Labour have not even begun to sort out housing. Their planning stuff is ludicrous. They’re failing to seize the opportunities in London. I think a lot of what Rob [Jenrick] has been saying has been spot on.”
Speaking on the Laura Kuenssberg show, Mr Jenrick responded to one viewer’s question about his political shift from the centre to the right, defending his change of stance on Brexit which he once warned would “lead us into a dystopia”.
He explained: “I was concerned that it would prove difficult for the British state to realise all the benefits of Brexit, and in some respects, I’ve been justified in that regard.
“We’ve had a great deal of economic and constitutional disruption as a result of leaving the European Union, but I don’t think we’ve gained all of the benefits, and that’s what I want to see.”

Mr Jenrick also insisted that Britain can leave the ECHR without undermining the Good Friday Agreement.
He proposed a new British Bill of Rights which ensures peace in Northern Ireland, insisting his approach will be pragmatic and not ideological.
Ms Badenoch was accused of ‘bottling it’ as she refused to appear on Ms Kuenssberg's show alongside her rival.

A Tory source said: “Whoever becomes leader will need to be up for scrutiny and media -interviews — that’s how the -public get to know you.
“Jenrick has his critics, but where’s Kemi? Feels like she’s hiding and has bottled it.”
Ms Badenoch’s team hit back that the leadership race is “not about who does the most interviews”.
