Two men, aged 42 and 43, and a 42-year-old woman have now been charged in connection with her death.

They are due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court today.

Caroline was last seen at 12.15am on August 24, 1996, as she walked along the riverbank.

She had spent time with her best friend before leaving to meet her boyfriend.

Caroline is then feared to have been followed as she made the short journey.

The alarm was raised when she failed to show up and she was discovered the next morning partially submerged in the river.

She had been battered and left for dead with her shows left on the side of the riverbank.

Caroline's mum Margaret McKeich previously said: "I am just waiting for that knock on the door telling me there has been a breakthrough.

"I imagine that scenario all the time and think about what it would be like.

"The cold case team are looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes and starting from the beginning so there is a lot for them to get through."

The case was reopened in 2016 and police issued an appeal for information on the 21st anniversary of her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Grainger, of the Major Investigations Teams and senior investigating officer on the case, said: “I would like to thank the members of the public who have assisted with our investigation and those who have come forward with important information surrounding Caroline’s death.”
