TalkRadio host Julia Hartley-Brewer has asked MP Tom Tugendhat whether Britons are “going to war with France” as the fishing row in Jersey continues. In response, the Foreign Affairs Committee chair said "we all need to calm down and engage better”. The exchange came after French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune threatened to cut Jersey off from the energy grid if the terms of the Brexit deal are not respected.
“What do you make of it?”
Mr Tugendhat, the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said in response: “What I think is we all need to come down, frankly.”
The broadcaster chipped in: “But we have been perfectly calm on this side haven’t we?”
“That's quite an extraordinary threat. That's not the sort of threat you'd expect from friends.”
The MP said: “Well, let's look at who that comes from. That doesn't come from the French state.
“So it's not, I'm afraid, particularly unusual thing for different people in France to do.”
