SIR Keir Starmer was urged to recall Parliament as the riots across the country dominated the Conservative leadership election.
Former Home Secretary Priti Patel said MPs currently away for the summer break should return to Westminster and speak with one voice to condemn “violence and thuggery”.

She said: “Now is a moment for national reflection and solidarity - to pull back from the wave of violence we have seen, to call it out for what it is without fear or favour - and for Parliament to speak with one voice in condemnation.”
Dame Priti, one of the favourites in the contest to replace Rishi Sunak as Tory leader, said: “We either believe in the rule of law, or we do not. That is why Parliament must be recalled immediately.”

Other candidates also condemned the disorder. Former Home Office Minister Robert Jenrick attacked the “far-right” for organising riots and said the Government should consider banning the English Defence League, a group which has promoted hostility to Muslims.
He said: “Throughout my time in Government I encouraged the prescription of dangerous and extremist groups, whether that was Hamas, Hezbollah, Hizb ut-Tahrir, and if there is a case for doing so for the EDL then that should be considered in the normal way.”
Shadow Home Secretary James Cleverly urged the Government to “come down hard and fast” on social media firms after lies spread online were blamed for helping cause riots.

Mr Cleverly said: “We cannot tolerate the spread of disinformation and fuelling of conspiracy. The Government and the Home Secretary must come down on this hard and fast, but so far they have equivocated and obfuscated when asked what they are going to do.”
He added: “Tech companies have a serious responsibility to stop the spread of disinformation and prevent criminal activity on their platforms.”
Sir Keir last week warned violent disorder “was clearly whipped up online,” telling social media firms: “That is also a crime. It is happening on your premises and the law must be upheld everywhere.”
Shadow Communities Secretary Kemi Badenoch, also standing for the leadership, said the rioting showed Britain needed “a clearer strategy on integration”.
