PETALING JAYA: Johor should develop a system to support the usage of electric vehicles in the state, including charging stations.

This was the aspiration of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar that was shared with Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

"I agree with the Sultan that Johor should take proactive action to develop the ecosystem for such vehicles.

"This includes aspects like charging stations, the development of battery technologies, research and development activities and other supporting sectors for electric vehicles," said Dr Wee in a Facebook post on Saturday (April 23).

The MCA president had sought an audience with the Sultan earlier in the evening at Istana Danga in Johor Baru.

He said Sultan Ibrahim gave his views on developing electric vehicles in Malaysia and was informed of the direction and policies to support such facilities here.

In the meeting, Dr Wee said he also informed Sultan Ibrahim about the latest status of the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) project, Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme in Johor Baru, and other infrastructure plans involving the maritime and rail sectors.

The RTS Link project is a railway shuttle link between Johor Baru and Singapore, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

The SBST programme in Johor is a three-year commitment worth RM150mil by the Federal Government aimed at boosting the quality of stage bus services in Johor Baru and surrounding areas such as the Kota Tinggi, Masai, Kulai, Gelang Patah and Pontian corridors.
