Covid-19 Watch: 2,239 new cases, nationwide ICU bed usage at 56.3pc

       PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 2,239 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (May 15), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,478,112 infections since the pandemic began.

       The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal reported that 2,236 of Sunday's new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while three imported infections were logged.

       Some 1,263 patients recovered from the virus on Sunday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,411,762 since the pandemic began.

       The portal also reported that there were 30,735 active cases currently in the country, with 29,516, or 96%, observing home quarantine and four individuals admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

       The CovidNow portal reported that 1,215 patients, or 3.95% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 45, with 23 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

       The ICU utilisation rate nationwide stood at 56.3%, with six states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

       Melaka had the highest ICU utilisation rate at 75%, followed by Kedah (74%), Selangor (69.6%), Kelantan (68.4%), Johor (65.8%) and Kuala Lumpur (62.9%).

       Meanwhile, the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository reported that three Covid-19 deaths were reported on Sunday, of which one was classified as brought-in-dead (BID).

       This brought the death toll to 35,615.
