TOKYO -- Black smoke began billowing from a building on Tokyo Metropolitan University's Minami-Osawa Campus on the afternoon of Dec. 4 in what may have been a science experiment gone awry.
Authorities received an emergency report of "black smoke coming out of a chemistry lab" at the campus in Hachioji, western Tokyo, at about 12:50 p.m. According to the Metropolitan Police Department's Minami-Osawa Police Station and other sources, there was a fire on the fifth floor of the building housing the faculties of Science and Urban Environmental Sciences.
As of 2:30 p.m., the fire had burned a space of approximately 30 square meters on the fifth floor. No injuries have been reported.

The police have said there is information suggesting the smoke began during a science experiment. The Tokyo Fire Department is working to extinguish the fire.
