Prince Frederik of Denmark, 53, has announced that he will not be able to travel and is currently isolating at home. “His Royal Highness the Crown Prince has had to cancel his participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, as the Crown Prince is in close contact with a person infected with COVID-19.

       "Due to stricter entry requirements at the Olympic Games, this means that the crown prince does not have the opportunity to travel to Japan,” the statement from the Danish royal courts read.

       It has been reported that his wife, Princess Mary, and four children do not have to isolate as they have not been identified as close contacts with the positive case.

       His attendance at the Tokyo games was set to be the Danish Crown Prince's last Olympics as an active member of the International Olympic Committee. He has been a part of it for 12 years.

       The Royal had planned on flying to Tokyo on July 19 and returning home on July 26.

       His formal resignation from the committee was set to take place on July 20 to July 21, their 138th general assembly.

       However, the palace has announced that Frederik will still attend, albeit virtually.

       The Danish Prince announced that he was resigning from the committee last month in a statement provided by the Royal Household.

       "The decision to resign gives me the opportunity to intensify my work on other important issues, including in relation to Denmark's position as one of the world's leading nations in the green agenda, sustainability and innovation," the statement read.

       The royal pair have a personal history with the Olympics.

       Princess Mary and Prince Frederik famously met at the Sydney Olympics in September 2000.

       Mary Donaldson chatted to Prince Frederik, completely unaware that she was speaking to the heir to the Danish throne

       I didn’t know he was the prince of Denmark,” Mary later revealed.

       “Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, ‘Do you know who these people are?’”
