A top member of the SNP has been booted from the party after posting "deeply offensive" comments about Israel on his social media.
John Mason had the whip withdrawn in August after writing on social media: "I personally do not believe that Israel has tried to commit, has committed, or is committing genocide. They certainly have the ability to kill many more Palestinians than they have done.

The long-serving MSP for Glasgow Shettleston refused to apologise for the controversial comments, which SNP public finance minister Ivan McKee called "deeply offensive".#
McKee told Mason to "educate himself" after the social media posts welcoming the chance to meet the Israeli ambassador to London.

Mason announced his expulsion from the party on Sunday, saying he was "very disappointed" with the decision and would continue his commitment to Scottish independence.
He said: "Very disappointed to be expelled from the SNP over my comments on Israel, Gaza, and whether or not there has been genocide.
"I continue to believe that we should be able to tolerate a variety of views within the party as long as we are all committed to Scottish independence.
At the time his controversial comments were made, an SNP spokesperson called them "completely unacceptable" as they "flippantly dismissed" the deaths of tens of thousands.

They said: "To flippantly dismiss the death of more than 40,000 Palestinians is completely unacceptable. There can be no room in the SNP for this kind of intolerance.
"The chief whip has today withdrawn the whip from John Mason MSP with immediate effect, pending internal Parliamentary group due process.
Despite this, Mason doubled down, adding that he hadn't expected to lose the whip but it was necessary to do the "right thing".

He told BBC Scotland: "I thought about it for a long time, and I would like to see Scotland, the UK, acting more as a peacemaker, rather than cheering on either side.
"But I put out that tweet because I do feel strongly. Israel, and the Jews in this country as well, feel very much threatened and under pressure. Israel is a tiny country surrounded by some very hostile states."
