Conservative MPs have voiced frustration and irritation with Lord Cameron’s “sniping” at Israel over its handling of its war with Hamas, it has been revealed.

A group of pro-Tory MPs is set for a showdown with the foreign secretary on Tuesday, with comments voicing “irritation” at the foreign secretary’s criticism of Israel.

While calling out Hamas’ continuing refusal to release innocent Israeli hostages abducted on October 7, Lord Cameron has frequently called on Israel to amend its tactics and policies.

Last week the Foreign Secretary criticised Israel for not increasing the amount of aid getting into the Gaza Strip, and warned about the prospect of a military offensive in Rafah.

Theresa Villiers, a former cabinet minister who represents a strong Jewish constituency in North London, warned that the UK Government “must [support] Israel’s right to defend itself from the genocidal death cult that attacked them on October 7”.

“Lord Cameron should acknowledge the huge efforts being made by the IDF to minimise civilian casualties and also to facilitate aid to Gaza.”

She implied his overenthusiastic criticism of Israel could even jeopardise Britain’s diplomatic partnership with “the only democracy in the Middle East”.

Andrew Percy, the Commons’ most outspoken Jewish MP, fumed that the Foreign Office “repeatedly” places “all of the emphasis on Israel and holds them to account for the consequences of a war they did not start and for civilian suffering which is [a] result of the actions of Hamas”.

Bob Blackman MP added: “We’ve got to be more stringent in our support for Israel generally”.

In an attempt to assuage concerns, a Foreign Office source told the Sunday Telegraph that Lord Cameron “is a huge friend of Israel”.

“He went to Kibbutz Be’eri and has seen the horror of what took place there so he gets it.

"But sometimes being a friend means having to deliver a tough message, like over humanitarian aid.”

However fears about Lord Cameron’s attitude towards Israel go way back to 2010, when he used a visit to Turkey to compare the experience of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to that of a “prison camp”.

He warned: “The situation in Gaza has to change.

"Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions. Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp."

He then doubled down when asked about his undiplomatic language at a press conference, quipping: “My description of Gaza is something I said in the House of Commons several weeks ago.

“Perhaps this is final proof that if you want to keep something completely secret you should announce it in the House of Commons."

At the time, the Israeli ambassador to London hit back: “The people of Gaza are the prisoners of the terrorist organisation Hamas.

“The situation in Gaza is the direct result of Hamas' rule and priorities.”
