Days after Labour’s Vaughan Gething’s resignation as Wales’s First Minister, a leading critic has claimed the protracted controversy has underlined why the Senedd should be scrapped.

Party leader of the Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party Richard Suchorzewski branded the assembly “parasitic” in a caustic takedown in which he accused it of wasting hundreds of millions of pounds since its creation 25 years ago.

Mr Gething was appointed as the head of the Welsh Government on March 21, replacing the retiring Mark Drakeford.

However, he faced mounting criticism over his acceptance of a £200,000 donation from a businessman convicted of environmental crimes.

Last month he lost a vote of no-confidence by 29 votes to 27 - but decided not to resign.

However, he quit his post on July 16 after the resignation of four of his ministers, meaning he had been in the job less than four months.

Mr Suchorzewski, leader of the Abolish the Welsh Assembly Party, is a long-term critic of the Senedd who questions the work which it does.

He told Express.co.uk: ”I think there’s a growing discontent, if that's the right expression, and annoyance, with this whole concept of either perceived or real corruption within our political process.

“And for people to make claims for grants and then all of a sudden give a substantial donation to a politician who ultimately has some bearing on that grant procedure for example, of course people are going to look at that suspiciously and to question it.

“In a nutshell, our opposition as far as Abolish is concerned and has been since it's been established, is that there is no need for a Senedd.

“You have the UK Government. We did have a Welsh Office attached to that government because obviously you need an administrative procedure of some sort, to effect parliamentary legislation. We understand that.

“But why is there a need for extra politicians now? Those who are in favour of it would argue, well, you're making decisions at a lower level, where people have a vested interest in Wales.

“But that then discounts the whole purpose of your Member of Parliament. Surely your Member of Parliament has its interest in his or her constituency.

“And bearing in mind that pro rata when we had 40 MPs in the House of Commons, Wales, actually on a pro-rata population basis was over represented.

“If the answer to the question is more politicians, then it's a stupid request. And not only are they content with having 60, they're now going to increase it to 96 which is just in our view, a drain on financial resources.

“If the so-called Senedd really does listen to the people of Wales, why was there a huge rejection of the 20 mile per hour speed limit, except outside vulnerable areas such as immediately outside schools and things like that? Did they just ignore the people?

“They spent £30 million introducing the scheme and then realising they've got it wrong, and therefore now may have to spend another £5 million retracting some of those speed limits.”

Far from offering value for money, Mr Suchorzewski stressed, “if anything I believe all that they act as is is a parasitic source that actually removes money that could be spent directly on health, education, home, homelessness.

“They receive a budget close to £25 billion a year. Why are we in such a financial deficit? Why are wages lower in Wales than they are on average for the rest of the United Kingdom if these people's sole focus is supposed to be paying attention to the needs and desires of the people of Wales?”

Referring to the 1997 devolution referendum which saw Wales vote for the creation of the assembly in the first place, Mr Suchorzewski pointed out that the slim majority - 50.3 percent voting in favour off a 50.2 percent turnout “wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement”.

Subsequently, in every Senedd election, fewer than 50 percent of eligible voters had done so, Mr Suchorzewski pointed out.

He emphasised: “This is not personal in any way. We talk about snouts in the trough and this goes across all parties.

“You’ve have assembly members earning £60,000 and now I think it’s close to 70,000. It’s essentially a self enrichment scheme. How does that benefit the people of Wales?”

“One could potentially argue the they’ve wasted billions over the years, but I would say hundreds of millions.

“The cost of running the assembly alone is just over 30 million a year.

“I had two members defect to us from the Brexit party at the last general election so I actually got a first-hand insight into how it's running internally.

“What really struck me was that the vast majority of these politicians wouldn't even go in until Tuesday and came back home on Thursday.

“In essence, it struck me really as a part time job and now of course, they've allowed assembly members to work from home and to continue working from home.

“I would like to seriously question, how much work did these individuals actually do? And having met a lot of them, and I'm not going to name names because that would be unfair. hand on heart, I genuinely believe that certainly 50 percent and we could argue it's more would not be getting a job in private industry, offering half the salary that they're getting now, the caliber is so low there.

Now, I'm not saying everybody falls into that there are some very bright people in there. But the point I'm getting at is, it's really just become a job for politicos.

“And it's going to get worse because if our standard of education is so low, then does that not mean in the next generation or two the people who are going to be running this Senate if it isn't abolished are going to be even more left competent than they are now?”

Express.co.uk has approached Mr Gething, who remains in the job in a caretaker capacity until a successor is identified, via the First Minister's Office for comment.
