KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened an investigation into a public gathering on Tuesday at Istana Negara.

       Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said that the crowd, represented by four people, handed a memorandum to the Istana Negara head of corporate communications.

       Police estimated the crowd of around 700 people including those from political parties and NGOs.

       No notice was given to the police, ACP Amihizam added.

       “No arrests or seizures were made (at the gathering),” he said.

       He also urged all to not speculate on the matter and that the case was being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

       Tuesday’s gathering, dubbed “Selamatkan Tanah Air Kita Suara Rakyat Ke Istana Negara”, was organised by several Islamic NGOs who claimed that the current economic issues such as the rising costs of living have brought hardship to the masses, in particular the Malay Muslims.
