An NHS psychiatrist has died 16 days after he was attacked in a park, as a 16-year-old girl is among three people charged in connection with his death.

Dr Gary Jenkins, 54, was left fighting for his life following the attack on July 20 in Bute Park in the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

But police on Monday confirmed that the father-of-two died at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, 16 days later.

Three people, including a 16-year-old girl, have been charged with attempted murder, but the charges are expected to be reviewed after his death.

Dr Jenkins’s family released a statement following his death praising the consultant psychiatrist, who worked for Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust.

“We are distraught to announce the untimely death of Dr Gary Jenkins, who was a loving father of two wonderful daughters,” his family said.

“He lived his life happily with love, music, creativity and dedication to his profession.”

South Wales Police say they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the assault.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wales said: “We are aware of the sad passing of Dr Gary Jenkins and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

“We are liaising with both the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Coroner in respect of his death, and this matter will now be progressed as a murder investigation.

“I would like to thank the public for their valuable assistance as we continue to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

“While the three people have been charged, we are still appealing for information. No matter how minor the information might seem, it could be crucial to our investigation.

“In particular, we’d like to hear from anyone who was in Bute Park during the very early hours of Tuesday, July 20.

“Specifically we want to speak to anyone who was near the Millennium Footbridge, which links Bute Park to Sophia Gardens, between midnight and 1.20am.”

Jason Edwards, 25, Lee William Strickland, 36, both of Cardiff, and the 16-year-old girl are due to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on August 23.

Patients, friends and colleagues have paid tribute following Dr Jenkins's death.

One colleague wrote: “For Gary, a well-loved and much respected colleague who was great fun to work with. He was a wonderful, kind and hard-working psychiatrist who will be greatly missed in Cardiff and Vale.”
