Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been urged to seek advice from two highly unlikely - and very different - sources before making his mind up about who to appoint as the UK’s ambassador to the United States.
The Labour Government delayed appointing a new UK ambassador to the United States until after the presidential election on November 5, intending to avoid any perception of favouritism or political bias in the lead-up to the Presidential election, won last week by Donald Trump.

But Douglas Carswell, the former UKIP MP Clacton, believes he should turn to Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK and the man elected to his old seat in July, to help him identify a suitable name.
Some have fancifully suggested Mr Farage himself might be a suitable candidate, although Brexiteer Mr Carswell, now the CEO and President of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, acknowledged such an outcome is unlikely.

He told Express.co.uk: "I don't get me wrong. I'm a big admirer of Nigel. I'm hugely pleased that he got elected to Parliament. I did everything I could to help him in a limited way that I was able to.
“But I just don't, I don't think that's a credible position to expect him to have that formal role. It’s got to be someone that Starmer is comfortable with. So it's got to be someone from the Labour tribe."
However, Mr Carswell went on to say that if he doesn't appoint Mr Farage, he should certainly be asking for his advice.
He said: “Having said that I certainly think it was very foolish of a Labour minister to say over the weekend that they wouldn't be asking Nigel for his advice.
"They should certainly, informally be asking Nigel for his advice. And it's immensely stupid of them to suggest otherwise - they need all the help they can get.”

Nevertheless, the choice of ambassador was arguably the biggest choice the Government would need to make in the next month or so, Mr Carswell stressed.
He continued: ‘I'd also be fascinated to know what Tony Blair would think. I'm not suggesting he would be the ambassador, but I would be fascinated to know.
“To given Blair due credit, he understood the importance of working with an American president. Blair went from working well with Clinton to working well with Bush for example. He understands the special relationship.”
By waiting until the election concluded, the government is seeking to ensure that the new ambassador would be in a position to work impartially with whichever administration won, maintaining the UK’s commitment to diplomatic neutrality and avoiding any influence on, or perceived interference with, US domestic political matters.

Such an approach was likely intended to safeguard the diplomatic relationship between the two nations, regardless of the election's outcome. Sir Keir will likely be keen to avoid any repetition of the diplomatic row which erupted after in 2019, when then-ambassador Sir Kim Darroch was shown to have criticised Mr Trump in a series of leaked cable messages.

Specifically Sir Kim - who now sits in the House of Lords - branded his administration “inept,” “insecure,” and “incompetent,” and suggested that it was unlikely to "ever look competent.”
Mr Trump responded angrily, labelling Sir Kim as a “very stupid guy” and “a pompous fool.” He further escalated the situation by announcing that his administration would no longer work with Darroch, effectively isolating him within his diplomatic role.
The backlash ultimately led to Sir Kim’s resignation, as he felt his position had become untenable and that he could no longer effectively represent the UK in Washington.
