YANGON (Kyodo) -- Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged with electoral fraud, adding another case to the many she is already facing, a state-run newspaper reported Tuesday.
On Monday, the election commission appointed by the country's ruling military brought the fraud case related to last November's general election.
Suu Kyi, Win Myint, the deposed president of the government led by Suu Kyi as state counsellor, and 14 others are accused of exerting influence over the election, according to the report by the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar.
Suu Kyi's formerly-ruling National League for Democracy party won resoundingly in the election.
Claiming the election was marred by fraud, the military toppled Suu Kyi's government in a coup in February. It has also detained her, Win Myint and other prominent members of the NLD.
Suu Kyi and the others allegedly pressured election officials to permit ineligible voters to cast ballots while engaging in other illegal acts during the election, according to the report.
She has already faced charges of breaching COVID-19 restrictions during the election, violating the Official Secrets Act and engaging in corrupt practices.
The ruling on the charge of breaching COVID-19 restrictions is expected to be handed down in December at the earliest.
