A motorist was fatally injured late Monday afternoon in a crash on the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County, the Virginia state police said.

       The driver, described only as male, swerved onto the right shoulder west of Telegraph Road about 5:35 p.m. to pass traffic, police said, based on witness accounts.

       His car struck a vehicle in the right lane, and then hit the back of a flatbed wrecker that was stopped on the shoulder, according to police.

       He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died, police said.

       Further details were not immediately available, police said.
