Liz Cheney tells Republicans defending rioters: ‘When Trump is gone, your dishonour will remain’
The select committee investigating the assault on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 has reconvened for another hearing, to focus on how Donald Trump and his lieutenants spread the so-called “big lie” in the months leading up to the insurrection.
The event was scheduled to start at 10am ET, but was delayed after Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, Bill Stepien, dropped out of testifying at the last minute citing a family emergency.
In advance of the hearing, Democratic panel members Adam Schiff and Jamie Raskin both said that the Justice Department needed to properly take on board “credible evidence” they say they have gathered of the president’s culpability for the insurrection.
“There are certain actions, parts of these different lines of effort to overturn the election that I don’t see evidence the Justice Department is investigating,” Mr Schiff told ABC News.
Last week’s hearing featured harrowing and previously unseen footage of the riot itself, as well as excerpts of the committee’s interviews with Mr Trump’s daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Jared Kushner told Trump following Rudy Giuliani’s lead after the election was “not the approach I would take if I were you”.
The first witness Chris Stirewalt is dismissed and the hearing pivots to recorded testimony by form attorney general Bill Barr.
“I made it clear I did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff - which I told the President was bullshit. I didn’t want to be a part of it, and that’s one of the reasons that went into me deciding to leave when I did.”

More video is shown of campaign manager Mr Stepien and what he felt about the prospects of Trump’s reelection after election night: “Very, very, very, very bleak.”
He says that Mr Trump’s team split in two and he didn’t mind being characterised as “team normal” as opposed to being on Rudy Giuliani’s team.
Mr Stepien says he ultimately stepped away from Trump campaign because things happening after election night were not “honest or professional.”

The January 6 Committee showed a video of former President Donald Trump setting up his false claims of election fraud during its second hearing.
Zoe Lofgren, a Democratic committee member and California representative, said on Monday that “the plot to overthrow the election was complex and had many parts”.
She said that Mr Trump’s plan to overthrow the election “relied on a sustained effort to deceive millions of Americans with knowingly false claims of election fraud”.

“The Trump campaign made it clear they were going to try and exploit this anomaly,” Mr Stirewalt says of the lag time in getting final election results.
Stirewalt explains vote-counting can unfold in many ways, but it doesn’t change the end result.
He compares it to putting together a jigsaw puzzle, it doesn’t matter which piece you put in first, the end image is the same.

Mr Stirewalt explains the phenomenon of the “red mirage” whereby more Democrats vote by mail and more Republicans vote on the day producing early leads for the GOP that are then whittled away or eclipsed as mail-in votes are counted.
This was more pronounced in 2020.
