Seven of the 12 new charges relate to one of the existing eight victims. The remaining five relate to three new victims.

Prosecutor Thom Dyke said: "The 12 charges are to be sent to join up with the 29."

Patrick Hill, defending, said at Westminster Magistrates' Court today: "There is already a 29-count indictment against Mr Carrick.

"One of the complainants, the first, is a complainant who is already before the Crown Court. These are further charges."

The additional 12 charges will merge with the existing indictment and Carrick, was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing at the Old Bailey tomorrow.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “We recognise that these are extremely serious and concerning allegations.

“Referrals have been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as the investigation has progressed. ??
