Two vehicles collided head-on in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55, killing both drivers in a fiery crash around 3 a.m. Sunday, according to Illinois State Police.
Authorities said the driver of a 2006 green BMW 750 was traveling the wrong direction along the Stevenson Expressway just north of LaGrange Road, when the car collided with a 2017 white Ford Explorer.
Both vehicles caught fire and “became engulfed in flames,” state police said in an email.
Barrett Callaghan, a 25-year-old from Orland Park, was driving the Explorer, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:30 a.m., according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The other driver also was pronounced dead, but the medical examiner’s office had not released his name or age as of Monday morning.
All southbound lanes of the Stevenson near the crash site were closed until around 9 a.m. following the crash.
