       Michael Dylan Welch

From December, The Mainichi welcomes Michael Dylan Welch as a guest selector for our Haiku in English section to fill in for our regular selector, Dhugal J. Lindsay, for two months during Dr. Lindsay's absence.

Mr. Welch has been writing haiku since 1976. He has edited three haiku journals, Woodnotes (1989-97), Tundra (1999-2001), and First Frost (2021-present), and co-founded the Haiku North America conference (1991) and the American Haiku Archives (1996). He also founded the Tanka Society of America (2000) and National Haiku Writing Month (2010). His haiku and senryu have won first prize in the Henderson, Brady, Tokutomi, and Drevniok contests, among others, and he has published his haiku, longer poems, essays, and reviews in hundreds of journals in at least 20 languages worldwide.

In 2013, he was keynote speaker for the Haiku International Association annual convention in Tokyo. Mr. Welch's website, devoted mostly to haiku, is www.graceguts.com. He lives with his Japanese wife (who is from Gifu Prefecture) and their two teenagers in Sammamish, Washington, USA.
