ALOR SETAR: A first Covid-19 case among tourists in Langkawi has been detected by the state Health Department here.
State Health director Dr Othman Warijo said the case involved a three-year-old boy from Nilai, Negri Sembilan who tested positive for the virus after symptoms appeared on Sept 25.
"The child arrived with his parents on Sept 24 at about 7.30pm from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) in Langkawi and showed no symptoms while en-route and during screening at the airport,” he said in a statement on Sept 30.
Dr Othman said RTK-Antigen tests were conducted on both parents, which turned out negative, and the child wore face masks all the time while at KLIA2 during the flight and when arriving in Langkawi.
He said the child's parents had received complete Covid-19 vaccinations and have no history of Covid-19 or being in close contact to Covid-19 cases.
He said the child was brought for treatment and was confirmed positive on Sept 26.
He said the child only showed mild symptoms and was placed at the Langkawi Covic-19 Assessment Centre (CAC).
"Investigation also found that three relatives of the parents' child, who are Langkawi residents, have become close contacts to the case.
"The child's parents and three relatives have been quarantined for 10 days and the results of their swab tests turned out negative," he said.
Dr Othman said the child’s infection might have happened before the family arrived in Langkawi, adding that thorough investigation and close contact tracing are being continued.
He said as of Thursday (Sept 30), only one positive case was recorded involving tourists visiting the popular resort island, and there is no further infection among the family or local residents.
