Is the Blackwall Tunnel closed? Weekend closures spark traffic chaos

The Blackwall Tunnel on the A102 is a key route into central London, running under the River Thames and linking Tower Hamlets and Greenwich. However, disruption has been caused this weekend, after the latest in a string of closures takes place.

Transport for London (TfL) announced the Blackwall Tunnel would be closed today - Sunday, July 25 - to facilitate safety critical repairs.

However, this has frustrated Brits, who have taken to social media to complain about the tunnel being closed.

One person said: "Blackwall tunnel being closed has really messed up my day."

The tunnel is closed southbound between 12.01am on Sunday, July 25 to 5am on Monday, July 26.

Commuters can still head northbound through the tunnel however are asked to make other arrangements for southbound journeys.

Writing on its website about the closures TfL said: "TfL regularly maintains its?tunnels to ensure that they are safe to use.

"Upgrades to the Blackwall?Tunnel's fire detection system are needed to ensure they work optimally in the event of a fire."

The transport service has warned roads in the area around the Blackwall Tunnel are likely to be busy due to the closures.

For the bus route which runs through the tunnel, during the closures, buses will run via Tower Bridge.

This will see stops missed at Blackwall Tunnel/East India Dock Road and Dreadnought Street.

If looking to cross the river, TfL advises you use the Jubilee line or Dockland's Light Railway instead.

For drivers, try and use routes avoiding central London where possible such as the A406 or M25 and use river crossings further out to complete journeys.

TfL also says: "Nearby alternative routes across the river are expected to be busy and delays are likely."

"People travelling locally on Sunday, July 25 are encouraged to use the Jubilee line or DLR services across the river."

Glynn Barton, TfL's Director of Network Management, said:?"Safety is our top priority, and this critical closure of the?southbound Blackwall Tunnel?is essential to?ensure?the?tunnel?remains safe for people to use.?

"I'd like to ask people in the area who need to travel to plan ahead for their journeys and to thank them for their patience while we carry out this work."

If you are opting to use public transport due to the closures, you can check which route to take using TfL's travel planner.
