A man who shot and killed two Elgin men during a 2018 drug deal for a pound of pot was found guilty of first- and second-degree murder Wednesday by a Kane County jury.
Travaris D. Stevenson, 26, of Chicago, was also convicted of armed violence in the shooting of Raymond Dyson, 29, and Mark McDaniel, 26.
Prosecutors said Stevenson drove from Chicago to Elgin after arranging to sell marijuana to Dyson and McDaniel on the afternoon of April 29, 2018, a state’s attorney’s office news release said. With the two victims in the front seat of a car parked in the first block of Longwood Place, Stevenson climbed into the back seat and ultimately shot Dyson in the back of the head and McDaniel in the back.
Stevenson and his accomplice fled on foot with the drugs and were caught by Elgin police about 20 minutes later about a half mile from the crime scene, the release said.
Stevenson’s next court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Under state law, he could be sentenced to anywhere from 60 years to life in state prison.
Stevenson remains at the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $5 million bail.
