TANJUNG MALIM: Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah officiated at the 100th anniversary celebration of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) here Monday (Nov 29).

       Sultan Nazrin, who was accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, was greeted by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md. Taff on arrival at 10am Monday.

       Among others, the celebration was held to cherish past memories and recognise the contributions of all alumni of UPSI, dating back from the time it was known as the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) then renamed Sultan Idris Teachers Institute (MPSI) and later becoming UPSI.

       After the launch ceremony, Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara were also taken to an exhibition tracing the early development, history and achievements of UPSI.

       In her speech, Noraini said technological advancements and the arrival of fourth industrial revolution required drastic changes in the country's higher education sector to be more proactive and responsive to the environment.

       "The Covid-19 pandemic, for example, has opened the eyes of everyone around the world on the importance of new educational approaches compared to conventional methods and as such, digitisation is among the initiatives that we must adopt” she said.

       Therefore, Noraini said the university must adapt to the times, especially with the development and increasing importance of technology.

       She highlighted that UPSI should also focus on digitalisation in its teaching and learning methods through the expertise available in achieving the country’s aspirations to have a holistic and future-proof education system.

       "The Higher Education Ministry has always been supportive of UPSI's efforts in upholding the quality of education in the country. In this regard, we have high hopes that the UPSI community will continue to fight, empower, and explore various approaches to boost learning outcomes and strengthen the national education system.

       "We look forward to seeing UPSI's expertise in introducing the latest methods, revitalising conventional teaching and learning with digital tools as well as designing a holistic curriculum based on all aspects of human development." she said. - Bernama
