Union RMT confirmed that a planned Tube strike is going ahead on Friday, January 7, 2022.

Its members operating the Central and Victoria lines will halt work on Friday from 8.30pm until 8am on Saturday.

They plan to do the same on Saturday, January 8, 2022, evening, from 8.30pm to Sunday morning 8am, and continue the strikes until June 19, 2022.

According to the union, new rosters for the Night Tube are being imposed on drivers which they are not happy about.

Talks have been held between the union and TfL but the row remains deadlocked.

In December, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “If London Underground and the Mayor (Sadiq Khan) thought this fight for progressive and family friendly working practices was going away they need to think again.

“Our members have been re-balloted and have delivered a solid mandate for action, ?and it’s the failure of London Underground and Sadiq Khan to address the grievances at the heart of the dispute that leaves us no option but to confirm the programme of action".

On Thursday, January 6, Mr Khan hit back and urged RMT bosses to call off the industrial action, saying: "This continuing strike action by RMT has caused widespread disruption for many Londoners and will cause further devastation for the city’s hard-hit retail, cultural and hospitality sectors at a crucial time if it continues until the summer.

“The Night Tube has an important part to play in our capital’s recovery and helps to improve safety for women and girls making their way home at night."

       Which Tube lines are affected?

For the meantime, it is just the Central and Victoria lines that are affected.

Night Tube services began again on both the Central and Victoria lines on November 27 for the first time since the pandemic.

However, there was a strike in the lead-up to Christmas too.

The union said the strike may be extended to other lines and will consider broadening the action “if London Underground fail to respond” to their demands.

Transport chiefs have said they are “disappointed” at the planned strikes, warning it will “cause unnecessary disruption”.

The Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines are still out of service at night as a result of the pandemic.

Why are the London Underground strikes taking place?

Transport for London scrapped the 200 part-time Night Tube drivers during the pandemic, with regular drivers now asked to work occasional night shifts instead.

In late 2021, Union RMT announced they plan to strike every weekend on the Night Tube from January 7, 2022, through to June in “an on-going fight to prevent the ripping up of staffing arrangements that would wreck the work life balance of drivers,” according to a statement sent to City A.M.

Strike action has been carried out since the Night Tube was restarted during the last weekend in November 2021 after being suspended in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
