PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has said he will step down as Prime Minister on Monday (Aug 16) as he does not have majority support but could remain if he manages to get the numbers, says a source.

The source said this was conveyed to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia MPs at a meeting at its party headquarters in Publika, Damansara on Sunday (Aug 15).

"He explained that he will be meeting the King tomorrow (Aug 16) and tender his resignation.

"The King would then have to find a candidate for prime minister who has the majority (support) of the House.

"He asked us if we could gather more support for him if we wanted him to stay on as prime minister," said the source.

The source also said Muhyiddin claimed that other parties in the Perikatan Nasional government were still asking him to stay on and that the coalition was still intact.

Another Bersatu MP said that all MPs also decided not to disclose to the media what transpired at the meeting as the announcement should come from Muhyiddin himself.

"Let the events take place first and we shall see," said the Bersatu MP.
