M1 traffic chaos: Two lanes shut after crash

The incident took place during the morning rush hour on the M1 northbound near Buckinghamshire. Two lanes have been shut from J14 from the Newport Pagnell service station to J15 for Northampton.

Recovery crews have been deployed to the scene.

The incident has caused tailbacks of up to four miles on the motorway.

Motorists have been told to expect delays of around 40 minutes.

In a post on Twitter shortly after 9am, National Highways wrote: “The M1 northbound #NewportPagnellServices (#NewportPagnell) to J15 (A45 #Northampton Wellingborough) 2 lanes have been closed due to a collision.

“Traffic Officers are currently at scene, Recovery are on their way to the area to assist.”

The traffic agency added: “#Buckinghamshire #Northamptonshire please be aware this incident is currently causing approx. 3.8 miles of congestion on the #M1 northbound between J14 and J15 near #MiltonKeynes adding at least 40 minutes to normal journey times.

“Please plan ahead if travelling this morning.”

Motorists can expect further disruption on the M1 this weekend due to planned road works.

The M1 northbound from J14 to J15 will be closed for 56 hours from 10pm tonight to 6am on Monday, October 25.

The closure is required as part of plans to extend the use of Smart Motorways from J13 to J16.

Work will be carried out to lower the road surface at Tongwell Lane Farm bridge and Little Linford Lane over bridge as it prepares to become a four-lane motorway.

In a statement, National Highways added: “This is a significant piece of work so unfortunately we have to close the road fully to undertake it safely. Diversion routes will be clearly signed for the duration of this closure.

‘If we are able to complete the work quicker than expected, we will re-open the road and will advise motorists and the public through social media and the electronic signs on the motorway itself.

‘Please note that these are provisional dates and are subject to change, as there may be conditions outside of our control, such as adverse weather, and road incidents.”

This is a developing news story, more to follow.
