A 91-YEAR-OLD woman in China’s Guizhou province survived for a week on a mountain after she got lost and even appeared to be in good spirits when she was saved by a rescue team.

Quoting Guizhou Daily, Sin Chew Daily said the woman was heard singing when she was found trapped on the side of the mountain by the team.

The woman, who has dementia, was reported lost on Nov 29, but police could not find her despite following directions from her family.

On Dec 5, police received a call that the woman had been found on the mountain but needed help getting down.

When the rescue team arrived, they were amazed to find the nonagenarian caught between two tree branches on the side of the mountain and humming a folk song from the Miao people.

She was believed to have lost her footing and slid down the side of the mountain, but the tree branches broke her fall.

“It’s lucky that these two branches were there or else, it would have been an entirely different story,” said one of her rescuers.

Although she had to be carried down the mountain on a stretcher as her legs were swollen, the woman was believed to have survived by eating some white radishes she had in her pocket.

       > The daily also reported that Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai, who is an avid baker, wowed Internet users with pictures of the Squid Game-themed cakes she baked for her niece.

Tsai, who won gold in a British competition hosted by Cake International in 2016 for her Marilyn Monroe cake, had re-created scenes from the popular Netflix series on the cakes.

“To celebrate the little princess’s birthday, aunty spent three days (making these cakes),” Tsai wrote on social media.

The 41-year-old showcased two of her latest creations – one featuring the “red light, green light” mechanical doll in the series’ first episode as well as another showing the guards in the game’s infamous stairs room.

Many fans expressed amazement at Tsai’s attention to detail in creating the 3D figures on her cakes.

“Only the Queen of Chinese-pop can outdo her own creations. The little girl is so lucky to be Jolin’s niece,” a fan wrote.

The highly-acclaimed Squid Game is rated TV-MA, which means for mature audiences only and not suitable for children under 17 because it contains one or more of the following elements: strong language, explicit sexual activity, or graphic violence.

The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers (Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil dailies). As such, stories are grouped according to the respective language/medium. Where a paragraph begins with a >, it denotes a separate news item.
