KOTA KINABALU: A woman was lucky to escape with minor injuries after a car rammed into her while she was at the payment counter of a fuel station.

The crash on June 5 caused quite the damage to the counter wall but the 52-year-old woman only sustained cuts and scrapes on her legs, said Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin.

He said the 9.30am accident happened when the driver of the car, a 54-year-old woman, mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal, leading the vehicle to crash into the victim in Jalan Sin Onn, Tawau.Prior to that, the driver had just finished pumping petrol and was getting ready to leave.

“After starting the engine, the driver stepped on the accelerator thinking that it was the brakes.

“This caused the car to lunge forward and crash into the victim, who was facing the counter,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the driver, who was uninjured, was later found to have no driving licence.

Police are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act.

A video of the incident had been circulated on social media.
