Watch again: MPs debate Gaza ceasefire in Commons

Watch as MPs debated a crunch Gaza ceasefire vote on Wednesday, 21 February.

The vote on a motion calling for a ceasefire took place amid mounting concerns about a possible Israeli attack on Rafah.

Labour had hoped to avoid another rebellion over the Israel-Hamas war by tabling an amendment to a Scottish Labour Party (SNP) motion demanding an immediate ceasefire in the region.

Sir Keir’s party on Tuesday publicly shifted its stance to back a call for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire”, giving MPs who were unhappy with the leadership’s previous handling of the issue a wording to rally behind.

Chaos ensued in the Commons when Conservative and SNP MPs walked out of the chamber in protest over Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s handling of the Gaza ceasefire debate.

Penny Mordaunt accused the Speaker of hijacking the debate and undermining the confidence of the House in its longstanding traditions by selecting Labour’s bid to amend the SNP motion calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza and Israel.

Sir Lindsay was forced to apologise to MPs after facing calls to quit.
