Winter Weather Advisory north and west of D.C. from 6 a.m. to noon Sunday, patchy freezing rain possible *

9:40 p.m. update: An update for those worried about freezing rain in the D.C. area Sunday morning...

Yes, the National Weather Service still has a Winter Weather Advisory in effect starting at 6 a.m. Sunday north and west of D.C., specifically for Montgomery, Loudoun, Howard, northern Fauquier counties and points north and west, for the possibility of freezing rain that could make travel difficult.

A spotty morning sprinkle or brief light shower is indeed possible in the advisory area, and with temperatures in the mid-20s to near 30, any rain that does fall would freeze on contact. So keep this in mind.

HOWEVER, most models now show any meaningful precipitation not arriving in the immediate D.C. area until after 11 a.m. or so. By then, temperatures should be rising above freezing with just plain rain, which will continue through the afternoon.

The exception could be parts of Frederick, Carroll and northern Loudoun Counties, where an hour or so of freezing rain would be possible before changing to plain rain.

       From earlier...

It was quite the cold start around the region today, though not quite cold enough to break D.C.’s nearly two-year streak of failing to fall below 22 degrees. The cold air mass will be tough to displace overnight, which sets the stage for a few hours of freezing rain on Sunday morning as a cold front quickly approaches. Areas north and west of the city run the greatest risk, but everyone should be cautious of slippery surfaces tomorrow morning. Precipitation will change to just plain rain by the afternoon as temperatures rise above the freezing mark in all locations.

Through tonight: It will be mostly clear through the evening hours, with clouds increasing quickly after midnight. Despite the increasing cloud cover, temperatures will remain quite cold, ranging from 20 to 26 degrees. Winds will be rather light out of the south at 5 mph.

Tomorrow (Sunday): Precipitation should move into the region sometime after 7 a.m. Temperatures will be hovering right around the freezing mark throughout the city and likely below freezing in the suburbs to the north and west. A few hours of light freezing rain is likely in those colder areas through the late morning hours, causing very slippery surfaces, especially secondary surfaces. Everyone will change over to plain rain by the late morning/early afternoon, with temperatures rising into the mid-40s. The rain will taper off in the evening and temperatures will drop into the mid-20s with increasing northwest winds at 20-plus mph.

Tuesday’s cold: A very cold air mass will settle into place early next week. In fact, the current forecast high of 26 degrees for D.C. on Tuesday would be the coldest high temperature since Feb. 1, 2019 (24).
