KOTA KINABALU: The body of a second victim of the boat capsize incident along the Padas river has been found on Saturday (Sept 25).
The remains of Joseph Sayah, 55, were recovered about 37km downstream from where the boat capsized near Batu 64, Kampung Saliwangan in Beaufort.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department deputy director, Farhan Sufyan Borhan, said the body was found at 6.45am by villagers around the area who immediately alerted search and rescue workers combing the area.
The body of another victim, Melvin Junaidi, 12, was found about 34km from the scene following search efforts by firemen and villagers on Thursday.
The two victims were believed to have drowned after they were swept away by strong currents when their boat capsized around 4.15pm on Wednesday.
However, an elderly couple on the boat survived after they managed to swim back to the riverbank.
In the Wednesday incident, the two victims together with two others had just finished grocery shopping in the Tenom town and were on their way home via the Padas river.
They were on a sampan when strong waves hit, overturning the boat.
Two of them managed to swim to the riverbank while the victims were swept away by strong river currents.
There is no other way to reach the accident location apart from taking an hour-long train ride and then walking to the river.
