PUTRAJAYA: As of now, no MP can prove to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he has majority support to be appointed as the new prime minister, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Prime Minister said after several lawmakers retracted their support for him, causing the legitimacy of his premiership and Perikatan Nasional government being questioned, he was looking at the option of resigning.
“I abide by the Constitution and will do what is honourable to resolve this political crisis.
“However, as of now, no member of the Dewan Rakyat can prove to have the majority support of other lawmakers to allow the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint as the new prime minister.
“If I were to resign now, it is not only me who has to step down. According to the Federal Constitution, the entire Cabinet will also have to resign.
“This means the Perikatan government that is administering the country will fall," he told a live telecast on Friday (Aug 13), accompanied by several Cabinet members.
Muhyiddin said if none of the MPs has majority support at the moment, a new prime minister could not be appointed as stipulated in the Constitution.
“When a prime minister cannot be appointed, so are the Cabinet members and a new government cannot be formed,” he said.
Muhyiddin also raised his concerns if the political crisis was prolonged and that a new government could not be formed as soon as possible.
"Who would ensure the national vaccination programme would proceed smoothly and according to schedule?
“The coming two months is crucial. If what the government has planned can be implemented according to schedule, we will achieve herd immunity in October.
“If it is disrupted by a never-ending political crisis, then the target cannot be achieved. The lives of the people will continue to be in danger,” said the Prime Minister.
