Everybody’s jaw dropped when Mokhtar Dahari announced in November 1975 that he would quit from competing in international tournaments.
The legendary footballer spoke about the pressure of having fans who expected him to score “goal after goal”. Supermokh the striker eventually changed his mind about retiring and continued to represent Malaysia until 1985.
He died in 1991 of muscular dystrophy at the age of 37. In June this year, FIFA named him as the third highest scorer in international football with 89 goals.
