The UK’s top financial organisations awarded Fujitsu contracts worth £1.4billion even after the computer giant’s role in the Horizon Post Office scandal became clear.
Tax authority HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the Bank of England and watchdog the Financial Services Authority all signed contracts with the Japanese IT firm.
The extent of Fujitsu’s involvement with the organisations responsible for managing the economy has been revealed by the House of Commons Treasury Committee.
MPs found bodies affiliated with the Treasury continued awarding contracts after a landmark High Court ruling found that “bugs, errors and defects” in Horizon's accounting software were to blame for apparent losses at Post Office branches, leading to the wrongful conviction of hundreds of sub-postmasters.

An additional £2billion worth of contracts were agreed before the ruling and continued afterwards. It means £3.4billion of Fujitsu contracts were active after 2019.

HMRC was the biggest customer, with total contracts worth £2.8billion.
Chairwoman of the Treasury Committee, Harriett Baldwin, said: “I hope this will aid transparency and scrutiny around the role of Fujitsu as a public sector supplier.
“The inquiry will run its course and it is welcome news that Fujitsu have agreed to pay towards the compensation that wrongly convicted postmasters are receiving.”

A total of 983 people were found guilty of crimes such as fraud and the Government has introduced emergency legislation to overturn the convictions. Others handed over life savings in a desperate bid to balance the books after being told by the Post Office that money had gone missing from their branches.

In a damning ruling in 2019, High Court Judge Mr Justice Fraser accused Fujitsu of “a lack of transparency” and said the firm had information about Horizon which it “sought to keep from the court, and may not even have fully disclosed to the Post Office”.
The firm has since admitted its role in the scandal and Paul Patterson, director of Fujitsu Services Ltd, said last month: “We were involved from the very start. We did have bugs and errors in the system and we did help the Post Office in their prosecutions of the sub-postmasters. For that, we are truly sorry.”
