OSAKA -- Due to heightened risks of mudslides following heavy rains, the central Japan city of Fukui has issued an evacuation order on the morning of July 29 for 55,720 residents in 15 districts.

The issuing of an evacuation order constitutes the second highest warning on the 5-level warning system. An order was also issued to 8,953 residents in one district of the Fukui prefectural town of Echizen.

The Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a warning for record-breaking rainfall in a short period, after it was estimated that roughly 100 millimeters of rain was recorded in the area in the hour ending around 6:10 a.m. on July 29.

The weather agency forecasts up to 150 millimeters of rain in Fukui Prefecture in the 24-hour period up to 6 a.m. on July 30, as well as up to 100 millimeters of rain in the neighboring prefectures of Toyama and Ishikawa.
