Chicago police launched a death investigation after a male body was pulled from the North Branch of the Chicago River in North Mayfair, roughly between Gompers Park and Saint Luke Cemetery.
A woman had been jogging in the area of 4032 W. Foster Ave., near the Jewel Osco shopping center at Foster and North Pulaski Road, according to Chicago police and the medical examiner’s office. Around 8:30 p.m., she” noticed something in the water,” according to a police notification.
“Upon further investigation, the witness believed there was a body in the water and called police,” it said.
The police marine unit was called out to investigate and an unidentified male body was pulled from the water, officials said.
Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman, said she did not have details about how deep the water was where the man was found or whether the marine unit deployed divers, a boat, or both.
The medical examiner’s office had not identified the male as of Sunday morning. An autopsy was expected to be performed Sunday to determine cause and manner of death. Police are treating it as a death investigation and it wasn’t clear whether foul play was suspected.
The area around Gompers Park is prone to flooding during strong thunderstorms such as those this weekend. Check back for updates.
