The Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting on southbound Interstate 55 early Sunday that left one person with serious injuries.
State troopers responded to the scene of the shooting on the interstate south of Pulaski Road in Cicero around 1 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release. The driver of a vehicle that was shot at, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Three passengers from the vehicle, a 23-year-old woman from Oak Lawn, a 22-year-old man from Chicago and a 22-year-old man from Hometown, were not hit by the gunfire and did not report any injuries.
Shots are believed to have been fired from an unknown vehicle traveling south on I-55, based on the initial investigation, troopers said. The vehicle that was shot at veered off the road to the left and crashed into the concrete median wall on the left side of the interstate before coming to a stop on the left shoulder.
Traffic was diverted off I-55 onto Pulaski Road for about two hours Sunday morning due to the investigation, which is ongoing.
