The emergency services were scrambled to Chorlton Road in the Hulme area of the city at about 6pm on Thursday. A cordon was put up between Bold Street and Marple Street with a large police presence at the scene.

Other cordons were in place on many of the neighbouring side roads, including Mackworth Street and Bankwell Street.

Traffic officers have been diverting cars away from the scene.

It is believed the person who died was a pedestrian and was not driving any of the vehicles involved, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Two of the cars were damaged inside the cordon and both had their hazard lights on.

A Mercedes people carrier was also damaged.

It is not known what has happened to the drivers of the vehicles involved.

Specialist officers from the serious collision investigation unit have been examining the road surface and making investigations.

It is thought they arrived at around 8pm.

The police have urged people to avoid the area.
