JOHOR BARU: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has given out aid to more than 21,000 needy families throughout the state since the first movement control order was imposed last year.

Sultan Ibrahim Johor Foundation (YSIJ) coordinator Mejar Cina Datuk David Wong said His Majesty has always emphasised the welfare of people whose livelihood had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Since April last year, more than 21,000 families coming from various districts throughout Johor have received food aid from Sultan Ibrahim through YSIJ.

“The aid is given almost on a weekly basis to needy families regardless of their race or faith, through cooperation with community leaders,” he said after presenting 300 boxes of basic necessities on behalf of Sultan Ibrahim to the Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception, the oldest church in the city, here yesterday.

Parish priest Father Edward Rayappan, who accepted the aid on behalf of the church, thanked Sultan Ibrahim, saying the aid was very timely.

He said that with the aid given by His Majesty, the church can help more affected families in this hour of need.

“We are deeply touched by the generosity shown by Sultan Ibrahim in helping the needy.

“We have seen an increase from people, regardless of their race or faith, requesting help from the church, either wanting food aid or even financial assistance during the MCO,” he added.

Father Rayappan said the church has also given monetary aid of between RM100 and RM300 to help people pay their bills or even their children’s school fees.
