KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is in a stable condition and is responding well to treatment, says his daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.

Marina said the elder statesman was readmitted to Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) two days ago following an elective procedure that was successfully carried out on Jan 8.

“He is now stable and is responding well to treatment.

“Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali as well as the family urge for the rakyat to pray for his full recovery,” she said in a brief statement yesterday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was among those who visited Dr Mahathir in the hospital.

Ismail Sabri, who arrived in a white Toyota Vellfire at 5.38pm, left about half an hour later.

Later, he wrote about the visit on Twitter, posting a picture of himself talking to Dr Siti Hasmah and her son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.

“I’m hoping for the family of Dr Mahathir to continue to stay strong,” he tweeted.

Also seen at IJN was a Mercedes-Benz S class with a royal emblem, which was accompanied by police outriders. However, it is not known who was inside the vehicle.

Those who visited Dr Mahathir remained tight-lipped, with no one addressing members of the press who had begun gathering at IJN in the afternoon following news that Dr Mahathir had been readmitted.

According to a spokesman from the Langkawi MP’s office, Dr Mahathir is currently in the coronary care unit (CCU).

On social media, politicians from across the political divide also wished for Dr Mahathir’s recovery.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and his wife prayed for Dr Mahathir’s speedy recovery.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh also said she was praying for Dr Mahathir.

“May God Almighty bless you, touch you and heal you,” she tweeted.

The 96-year-old was discharged from IJN on Jan 13 after he was admitted on Jan 7 for an elective surgery.
