Metro Transit Police, U.S. Capitol Police, D.C. police, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police and several Metro employees are expected to participate in the exercise, which will start at 8 a.m. Sunday. The drills are intended to test the agencies’ operational coordination, communications and response to security threats, which Metro said could appear as real emergencies and alarm people living or working in the area.

“The exercise will simulate a real-world response to an active assailant in the Metrorail system,” transit officials said in a statement. “People in the area will see and hear a large emergency response and police activity in and around the station, including simulated ammunition (blanks). Please be assured this is only a drill.”

Free shuttle buses will carry rail passengers between Eastern Market and Federal Center SW, the two stations to the east and west of Capitol South, while the station that serves the Blue, Orange and Silver lines is closed.

Metro said regular service should resume at Capitol South after 2 p.m.

Shuttle bus locations during the exercise include Third Street SW and D Street SW at the Federal Center SW station entrance, Independence Avenue SE and First Street SE near the Capitol South station, and Pennsylvania Avenue SE between Seventh Street SE and Eighth Street SE at Eastern Market.
