PARIT BUNTAR: A total of 143 undocumented immigrants, mostly from Myanmar, have been arrested in Kuala Kurau waters near here after their boat became stranded on the Kalumpang sand dune.
Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid (pic) said 87 people were arrested in the boat about six nautical miles (11.1km) off the coast on Saturday (April 30) while the rest were nabbed after swimming ashore while trying to escape.
The operation to detain the immigrants, whose ages ranged from five years to the 40s, was conducted between 7am and 12.30pm, he said.
Apart from 134 Rohingya, the undocumented immigrants included four Bangladeshi and five Myanmar men.
"Those detained comprised 66 men, 59 women, nine boys and nine girls,” he said. – Bernama
