Two lanes of the M11 southbound are closed between J13 for the A1303 Madingley Road in Cambridge and J12 in Barton as a result of the collision, which took place this morning. The accident is thought to have involved a lorry and a car. Traffic monitoring website Inrix has also reported that a car has gone into the central reservation as a result of the collision.
The delays stretch over seven miles on the M11.
The first two lanes are blocked, but traffic is passing on the hard shoulder.
Congestion is currently all the way back to J24 on the A14 at Boxworth, and there are delays to the opposite side due to onlookers.
Expected travel time through the area is expected to be around 1 hour and 30 mins.
There are also delays heading into Cambridge via Huntington Road (A1307), Queens Road (A1134) and the Fen Causeway as a result of the incident.
Drivers have been warned to avoid this area if possible.
Local emergency services have been contacted for more information on this accident.
National Highways tweeted: "#M11 southbound between J13 - J12 near #Cambridge lanes 1 and 2 (of 2) are blocked due to a collision with traffic passing on the hard shoulder.
"There are currently delays of 30 minutes above the usual travel time on approach."
Meanwhile, Cambs Travel News shared the incident on Twitter, writing: "#Cambridge. Delays heading into the city via #Huntingdon Road #A1307 due to ongoing incident on the #M11"
