'You lost it!' Edwina Currie ridicules Ian Blackford for not getting over 2016 referendum

During a discussion about the combined impact of Brexit and the pandemic on the hospitality industry on LBC on Saturday, the SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford and former Tory MP Edwina Currie descended into a ferocious argument. It followed Ms Currie suggesting that the SNP should send Scots to England to "man the hospitality industry" and come off universal credit. But Mr Blackford directed the conversation towards the impact of Brexit on Scotland, accusing the current hospitality staffing shortages in Scotland and England as a direct result of the 2016 referendum result. But the former Conservative MP ferociously hit back ridiculing the Scot for continuing to "fight" the Brexit result.

Mr Blackford said: “The main reason that we are struggling is that we don’t have the access to labour that we had we had when we were in the European Union and the loss of freedom of movement.

“It didn’t need to be that way.

“These are self induced problems… because we are paying the price of what is political dogma from Boris."

But Edwina Currie furiously hit back for Blackford’s comments.

She slammed: “You are still fighting Iain! You are still fighting the referendum campaign!

“And that is not two years ago, that is five years ago!

“And you lost it! And you lost it!

Blackford hit back: “No we didn’t! We won in Scotland with 62 percent!"

Currie interjected: “No you didn’t! Le me tell you something!”

But Blackford demanded he be allowed to finish his defence.

He said: “Edwina! We were told if we stayed in the UK our rights as EU citizens would be respected and we would be listened to.

       "None of that has happened!

“When we said give us access to the single market and customs union it could have been done, it wasn’t done.

“We have been shut out of this and that is why ultimately people in Scotland have changed their opinion on independence.

“And why when the referendum comes I believe that we will be welcomed back into Europe.”

Ms Currie insisted a second Scottish independence referendum "won't come" despite Mr Blackford's claims.
