My washing machine EXPLODED – Currys told me it’s not a big deal but I’m terrified it could hurt someone’s child

A MAN has warned Currys customers after his washing machine EXPLODED when it wasn't even switched on.

Gordon Bird said he's terrified children could be seriously injured or even killed if other family's machines suffer the same fate.

The IT worker, 49, explained he was chatting to his mum on Skype in the upstairs front-room of his home in Fleet, Hamps.

Gordon said he heard an almighty bang from the kitchen - which is the back room on the ground floor - and feared something inside his neighbour's home had fallen over and smashed, or glasses had crashed off his draining board.

He told The Sun: "I actually thought all the glasses on the draining board had all fallen off. I just heard it go bang. My mum who I was talking to on Skype at the time even said ‘What was that?’

“I came downstairs and stood on something and thought ‘What is that’ - it was a piece of glass.

“What ran through my mind was imagine if there was a kid in the house, imagine if it was on a spin cycle, and just imagine how dangerous that is."

He added: "I can’t believe how dangerous a washing machine can be. I had never considered the thing could just explode."

Pictures show shards of sharp glass sticking out from an empty hole in Gordon's ten-month-old Logik L712WM20 washing machine, which once was the door.

The 49-year-old said he's been "stressed out" after multiple failed attempts to contact Currys about the "urgent danger", claiming he was only contacted by a representative after a week of calls and emails and even contacting various CEOs on Linkedin.

He said: "What’s stressed me out is the amount of time it’s taken me to get hold of anybody to take notice that an accident has happened.

“When I spoke to the guy from Currys he told me they have three a day - I don’t know if it’s that model."

Gordon said he fears the company haven't taken the incident seriously - and wants to warn others of the "urgent danger", particularly anyone with vulnerable young children or pets who could be seriously injured by the exploding washing machine.

He said: “Seriously, if this thing can blow up when it’s switched off, imagine what could happen if there was a kid or a pet nearby?

“It hasn’t even broken safely, safety glass is supposed to break into non-sharp pieces and I actually cut my hand. If that had been a kid, they would probably be in hospital needing stitches.”

Gordon claims he was eventually contacted by Currys who told him that they didn’t regard the explosion as “dangerous”, and that the machines are “made to standard”.

“Well, the standard is clearly wrong,” he added.

Gordon said someone is coming to remove the machine later this week, and that he has asked for his money back for the £180 machine.

A spokesperson for Currys told The Sun: "We take the safety of our customers extremely seriously and we have rigorous processes in place to ensure all our products meet and, in some cases, exceed the latest in-market safety standards.

"We’re not aware of shattering glass being a common occurrence in Logik washing machines, however we’re investigating Mr Bird’s issue as a priority.”
